Appendix N: Sample of “How to study for a test”

by Irene

Study carefully for the test on Chapitre 1

How / what should you study?

1.  Vocabulary – go over the meanings and spellings of all the words that have been assigned.  A good idea is to lay a sheet of lined paper over the French column of words and then see if you can spell each word by writing it out.  [This can be very time consuming, so at minimum be sure to do this with the words that had one or more √ checkmarks in front of them!]  If you have the time, listen to all the words once more on KV / Blackboard, or on your iPod, if you have downloaded them.

2.  Grammar – re-read all the grammar notes given in class – the boxes on the gray sheets that are handed out every day in class.  It also wouldn’t hurt (time permitting) to re-read all the green boxes (“Structure”) in the text.

  • regular “-er” verbs  [Be able to conjugate them with each subject pronoun:  je, tu, il, elle, on, nous, vous, ils, elles.]  [Know how to translate these 3 ways into English.]
  • question formation with “est-ce que” and “n’est-ce pas?”
  • negation with “ne……pas
  • adverbs
  • the verb préférer  [Shoe verb è  watch the accents!]
  • the verb être
  • definite and indefinite articles [le, la, l’, les]  [un, une, des]
  • adjective agreement with adjectives of nationality and professions

 3.  Listening – in a sense there is really no way to prepare separately for this.  If you have faithfully done all the listening exercises that were assigned, and if you carefully checked your answers, you should be fine here.

 4.  Look over the “Pre-test” we did together in class.  Were there things there you were unsure about?  Go back to the TB and look at those things again.

5.  Culture – Re-read the culture notes and the margin notes in the TB.

6.  You should know some French / English cognates.

7.  If you STILL have any time left, look over the writing exercises you handed in for a grade.  What kinds of mistakes were you making?   It is always a good idea to make corrections to HW as quickly as possible, while things are still fresh in your mind.
