Metacognition — Helping Students Learn to Learn

How much attention do we give to metacognition — that is to helping our students think about how their brains work and how they learn best?  I have an entire chapter about this in my book and I was delighted and gratified to see that others are focusing on this topic too.

On November 5, 2015, Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire, retired assistant vice chancellor and professor of chemistry at Louisiana State University, gave a talk titled “Metacognition: The Key to Improving Writing (and Learning) in Every Course!”  The presentation was sponsored by Mississippi State University’s Center for Teaching and Learning.  Dr. McGuire teaches her students proper learning techniques.  She says:  “Learning the strategies motivates them because then they see that they have a chance to succeed.”  She focuses on “how a person studies and learns and prepares to apply knowledge and even take tests.”

How many of our students fail because they believe they will never be successful language learners?
