The Value of Direct and Explicit Pronunciation Practice with a Multisensory Component

by Irene

Two of the most important aspects of the pedagogical approach I have developed and written about in my book are multisensory teaching and the value of direct and explicit instruction.  This is especially true for pronunciation in the target language.

I recently came across an article that confirms my approach; it is written in the context of student teacher perception of innovative practices and their beliefs about teaching and learning.  Student teachers of English (to non-native speakers) were involved in directly and explicitly teaching English pronunciation, using movement and touch.

Here is a quote from the article: “Haptic pronunciation teaching encapsulates a systematic combination of movement and touch to teach English pronunciation to L2 learners.”  And another quote: “The actual method of the haptic pronunciation instruction is relatively standard and includes repetition and dialogue work.”

Check it out for yourself!  The article can be found through the Wiley Online Library at this link:  https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijal.12247
