Balls Replace Chairs

by Irene

I recently came across this news posting about how balls are replacing chairs in some Dallas classrooms within a boys’ school.  According to the school principal Dr. Chris Barksdale this has been a good thing for the students’ learning:  “We’ve found that our boys need movement. They need visuals. They need to touch things. Our active classrooms do just that.  Our students are more excited about learning because it incorporates movement and that’s how boys learn best.”

I would argue that balls could help not only boys, but any student who struggles with sitting still, which includes many students with ADHD, for example.  Research suggests that physical activity can help the brain to learn.  I heartily agree!  Why not give it a try?
